Hi!  I'm Julia

About Me

Hi, I’m Julia Tienson, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and bilingual therapist based in Portland, Oregon. I  provide therapy in Spanish and English. It's important to know that I'm a non-native Spanish speaker referred to as "la güera" by some of my Yucatecan amigos. I have been doing social service work in two languages since 2013 and am honored and committed to providing quality and culturally responsive therapeutic care.

It is my firm belief that we all equally and inherently possess the innate potential to become our truest, integrated self. From my social work lens, I believe it’s crucial to contextualize our sufferings and challenges in the systemically oppressive, capitalistic, patriarchal structures we live in. I seek to empower the people and communities I work with through authentic relationship and collaborative strengths-centered healing. I hope to support people to identify their innate resilience, attune to their embodied wisdom, and move toward a life that feels more aligned and fulfilling.

My approach integrates mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), trauma-informed somatic practices, and Buddhist philosophy. I work from a holistic, relational, and strengths-based lens, creating a space that is warm, non-judgmental, and collaborative.

I specialize in parenting and family therapy, supporting people through transitions of caregiving, growing up, aging, and loss. My perspective is shaped by my lived experience of being raised in Oregon, living internationally, being a mother, grieving daughter, and co-creating a blended family. All of this has deepened my compassion and contributed to a more personal understanding of family systems, grief, transitions, and resilience.

Background

I hold a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from Portland State University and am licensed in Oregon as a Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). My professional experience spans community mental health, schools, research, and group practice settings. I work with individuals, teens, and families, and also facilitate group therapy.

My professional path has always been guided by a deep curiosity about people and the systems we live within. I value preserving cultural identity, fostering belonging, and supporting clients as they connect more deeply with themselves, their communities, and their values. I believe that when we tend to our own healing, we strengthen the fabric of the world around us.  When we change, our environment changes.

Why 'Luminoso?'

Luminoso means “radiant” or “full of light.” The name reflects my belief that we each hold an innate luminosity, an authentic radiance that can guide us toward healing and wholeness. As a non-native Spanish speaker, I am consciously committed to serving the Spanish-speaking community with humility, care, and cultural responsiveness.

My intention is to continue building a bilingual and inclusive practice that honors the richness of language, culture, and connection. While my website is currently in English and my work is only telehealth-based right now, I am steadily moving toward offering hybrid, integrative care that reflects these values.

Growth & Curiosity

My own healing continues to evolve. I have a zest for learning and am energized by connection, community engagement, and integrative embodied healing.

Right now, that means I volunteer and am a part of a diverse leadership committee focused on envisioning and  ensuring the NE Portland, Cully community stays diverse and affordable with sustainable resources most relevant to our priority communities for generations to come.

I am focused on learning about nervous system regulation and somatic healing. I am trained in leading crystal bowl sound baths and plan to incorporate this into my work more. The healing vibrations of sound is an incredible neural reset and an experience I hope to share more widely.

My hope is that the "Wellness" part of Luminoso will integrate many parts of healing and wholeness and someday be a welcoming, sacred space in our community that people come to know, feel safe in, and choose to rely on for their holistic care needs. This is just the beginning...
